With 10 chapters across six countries, Europe’s exponential growth in 2018 has culminated in the regional membership surpassing 1,000 members for the first time. Additionally, one of HBA Europe’s leaders, Dagmar Albers, implementation lead, internal medicines, Pfizer, was awarded the 2018 HBA Innovation Award for her work in developing the Entrepreneurship affinity group, better tying an underrepresented group of HBA’s members into the or- ganization’s networks and resources. This year’s pièce de résistance in Europe was their annual European Leadership Summit (ELS), which Marina Gilic, confer- ence leader, and global marketing manager, Smith & Nephew, describes as a “signature event celebrating leadership so together we can continue moving the gender parity needle and making an impact.” More than 250 attendees from 15 countries attended this year’s congress held at Berlin’s striking AXICA Congress and Convention Centre, designed by world-renowned architect Frank O. Gehry and de- scribed by him as the “best thing (he) has ever done.” The ELS theme focused on entrepreneurship, but also explored other topics in a variety of formats: KEYNOTES FROM • Jeanne Bolger, VP, venture investments, Johnson & Johnson Innovation/JLABs, on the difference between innovation as an idea and entrepreneurship as an enterprise, between diversity and inclusive leadership. • Belén Garijo, CEO, Merck Healthcare, on leading for the future in healthcare, immediately followed by her daughter, Irene Mora Garijo’s, honest and striking presentation on the challenges and benefits of having a working mother as a role model, helping many in the audience manage the uncertainty of the impact their careers may be having on their children.
