Message from 2018 HBA Los Angeles president Disha Patel and call for volunteer/membership engagement

Happy new year. I hope you all had a relaxing holiday filled with joy and quality time with loved ones.

I am excited for a wonderful year for Healthcare Businesswomen Association (HBA) Los Angeles. I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself, the 2018 LA board, and some initial thoughts for 2018.

With the healthcare landscape continuing to transform and evolve, it is a time of inspiration and opportunity.  HBA LA is committed to bringing those inspiring, forward looking conversations and opportunities to life for our members and potential members.

I initially joined HBA six years ago, because I believed in its mission and wanted to expand my knowledge of the industry. Along the way, I have had some pleasant surprises. I never expected to build such amazing relationships with others who have become valuable mentors, advocates, as well as encouragers to help me realize my potential impact to the industry. And now, here I am as the president of the LA chapter, which I consider an honor and privilege.

The board convened in late 2017 to discuss our initial plans. We reviewed our current and potential membership makeup, our Corporate Partners, as well as reviewed survey results to actively listen to what is working well and what could be improved. Our 2018 vision is to build a strong foundation and execute with purpose and excellence to realize the HBA mission.

I am excited to work alongside a fantastic group that bring rich, diverse experiences to the table and are genuinely committed to the HBA mission.

Executive board
  • Vice president - Carolina Caro, Executive and Corporate Coaching Parinama Consulting
  • Operations director - Angelica Flores, Pfizer
Directors at large
  • Marketing and communications - Jinghuan Liu Tervalon, Pharmavite
  • Programming - DeAnna Steiger, Amgen Inc.
  • Membership and volunteer engagement-Deepa Samuel, Management Resource Solutions
In addition, we are fortunate to have Elle Hamilton (Syneos Health) and Michelle Fortin (Amgen Inc.), key volunteers, to aid in our Orange County and corporate relations activities.

As we begin the year, we have planned a new year’s brunch (20 January) and a skills event just in time for the season of performance reviews with Kimberly Farrell, chief executive officer and founder of Unlimited Performance Training on giving and receiving feedback (22 February). We look forward to unveiling future programming and networking events throughout the year and hope to bring joint programs with our fellow Pacific region chapters (San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle).

Our chapter is only as strong as its members. I encourage you to consider getting further involved to enhance your HBA membership and leadership experiences. Whether it be volunteering at a programming event, hosting an event, getting your company to become a corporate sponsor or partner, offering speakers/venues, or joining the marketing, programming or engagement teams – we welcome your enthusiasm, your ideas, and your helping hand. Please send us an email if you are interested or have further queries.

It is a new year with new possibilities. I look forward to meeting and engaging with you in 2018.

Best wishes,

Disha Patel (Amgen Inc.)
2018 HBA Los Angeles president
