On 29 September, HBA Indiana hosted its inaugural Healthcare Career Development Unconference at Miles Printing in Indianapolis, IN. A near capacity crowd turned out for this half-day event to learn about a variety of topics including early, middle and late career development, entrepreneurship, social media, personal brand development, and CV/resume/ interviewing/negotiating from 19 different speakers. Each speaker was given five minutes to present on a topic relating to career development as a mini session or pearl, to keep the energy up and the ideas flowing. Speakers were organized in groups of three as triads, and the audience had an opportunity for Q&A after each triad. Everyone participating also had the chance to bring “swag” with them to share with the audience and take home. Swag bags were sponsored by Miles Printing.
The event began with the late career triad which featured Shannon Johnson** (YourEncore), Colleen Hittle*** (Navigant) and Dr. Elaine Voci (Elaine Voci Life Skills Coaching). The discussion focused on maximizing career pivots for those nearing retirement and the importance of self-care for those caring for children and aging parents. The middle career triad included Karen Mangia (Salesforce and author), Elizabeth Walker** (BDC Advisors) and Jennifer Hurtubise (Indiana Hospital Association). The speakers echoed the importance of networking and goal setting. The early career triad was comprised of three pharmacists, Dr. Lauren Steinbach** (Myers and Stauffer and Walgreens), Dr. Christina Tarantola (The Fit Pharmacist and the Pharmacy Podcast) and Dr. Jaclyn Boyle (NEOMED and The Pharmacy Girl). This triad imparted the importance of a strong presence on LinkedIn, gender equality in healthcare leadership and the power of personal wellness.
Following lunch, the fourth triad focused on social media and networking. The speakers included Cassie Stockamp (Monumental Yoga), Rupal Thanawala* (Accenture), and Amy Stark (Digital Dames). All three speakers emphasized the power of social media and importance of tribe building. The resume and interview triad included HR professionals Ellie Dedinsky, Rebecca Kavanaugh (both of Myers and Stauffer), Deana Moore (Roche Diagnostics) and Dana Laird (Lilly). All four speakers provided a candid summary of job application and negotiation best practices. The final triad facilitated some of the most spirited audience participation of the day. This triad featured three entrepreneurs within the life science industry: Diana Caldwell* (Pearl Pathways), Kelly Hartman (Insights Consulting and Outside the Box) and Denise Pierce* (DK Pierce). The speakers each shared their unique journey from a corporate job into business ownership.
