HBA Rising Stars are professionals in various sectors of the healthcare industry and are designated by HBA's Corporate Partner organizations. Each Corporate Partner organization designates one Rising Star to be recognized that represents various career stages and disciplines and meet the following criteria:

  • Contributes significantly to their organization, preferably in numerous areas

Amy K. Butler, PhD – ThermoFisher Scientific  
VP, global head of marketing and ebusiness life sciences solutions

Dr. Butler is currently the head of marketing and ebusiness for life sciences solutions at Thermo Fisher Scientific, the world leader in serving science, with revenues of $17 billion and 50,000 employees in 50 countries. Prior to her current role, she led the global customer care organization, including both the customer service and technical support functions. Prior to this role, she led the gene expression profiling business, with global P&L responsibilities across a product portfolio that included PCR, qPCR, RNAi and epigenetic tools. Dr. Butler joined Invitrogen, then Life Technologies, now Thermo Fisher Scientific, in 2004. Prior to joining Invitrogen, Dr. Butler was an engagement manager with McKinsey & Co. During her three years with McKinsey, she served primarily large pharmaceutical companies on strategic issues in the areas of research and development, sales and marketing. Prior to joining McKinsey & Co., Amy was a developmental neuroscientist in the systems neuroscience division of the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California. Her work utilized molecular and electrophysiological techniques to examine brain development. Amy obtained her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in neuroscience. 

 

Judy Wai – Amgen
Executive director, tax planning

Judy Wai is the executive director of tax planning for Amgen Inc., the world’s largest independent biotechnology company. Judy leads the global tax planning team responsible for Amgen’s domestic and international tax planning, mergers and acquisitions and new country expansions. 

Judy has 25 years of tax experience, including service in public accounting and private industry. Judy received a BS degree from the California State University of Los Angeles, a master of business taxation from the University of Southern California and a master of business administration from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. She is a licensed certified public acountant in California.
