The 2012 HBA Boston chapter mentoring program is in full swing, involving over 200 Boston women. Piloted at our chapter in 2006 with five groups, the program has grown this year to a record number of 185 attendees in 31 groups, at two regional locations. We have proudly served nearly 600 individuals (mentors + mentees) since inception.

New this year is the Executive Mentoring Pilot program consisting of three groups of HBA members serving in senior roles and matched with very experienced mentors and/or professional career coaches. For some of these groups, we have recruited some fantastic male mentors because, face it, there are a lot of men in healthcare and in the boardroom. Focusing on leadership skills will certainly be important for these mentees as they strive for their next roles or new opportunities in their careers.

This year’s fabulous Boston/North Regional kickoff event was hosted by platinum sponsor Biogen Idec, with special thanks to Jane Atkins of Biogen Idec for working tirelessly to arrange logistics.

After brief introductions, groups met to get to know one another, do a fun exercise to create a team name (and the story behind why they selected it!) and to plan for their first group meeting. The event concluded with time to network and catch up over coffee and dessert. Speakers for the event included:

Luci Celona, Vice President, HR
Talent Acquisition & Global Mobility, Biogen Idec

Lisa Wittenhagen, Ph.D.
Manager Quantitative Research, Adheris, Inc
Director, Mentoring, HBA Boston

Joanne Kamens, Ph.D.
Exec Director, Addgene, Inc
Former Director, Mentoring, HBA Boston

HBA Boston’s new Boston South Region Mentoring has kicked off as well, led by Joanne Kamens, the previous HBA Boston mentoring director. The Boston South mentoring pilot includes 10 groups of HBA members living and/or working south of the city. This program is especially supported by Covidien employees and we are very grateful to the men and women from Covidien who stepped up to be first-time mentors in our program this year. Many of these groups will be made up of all Covidien employees, offering advantages in ease of meeting and common language.

The 2013 program will open for enrollment consideration in the Fall of 2012 for mentors and January 2013 for mentees.
