The Atlanta chapter of the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association (HBA), a global not-for-profit organization dedicated to furthering the advancement of women in healthcare, is now accepting nominees for the 2012 Woman in Healthcare Leadership Award. In its second year, the award recognizes a local woman who exemplifies strong and innovative leadership in the healthcare industry.

Spanning all disciplines, the award is open to women who play a direct or related role in Atlanta’s healthcare industry. Candidates should be women who have set an example for other women through a demonstrated commitment, passion and desire to contribute to their organization and the industry. Additionally, candidates should be women who mentor other women by offering guidance and support so that they too learn the necessary skills to become an empowered leader.

“Last year we were impressed by the incredible healthcare leaders we became acquainted with during the nomination process,” said Brenda Varney, director of established brands at UCB Pharma and 2012 president of the HBA Atlanta chapter. “We heard so many inspiring stories about local women in the industry, and our chapter is thrilled to be able to recognize a deserving woman again this year.”

Previous recipients include Candice Saunders, executive vice president of Wellstar Health System and president of Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. She oversees one of the largest hospitals in Georgia, which includes the second-busiest emergency department in the state, and she mentored fellow employees through the WellStar 21st Century Leadership Program, a nine-month fellowship program focusing on emerging leaders at the supervisory and management level.

"I was very honored to be recognized by the Healthcare Businesswomen's Association of Atlanta with this leadership award,” said Saunders. “I look forward to supporting other leaders as they pursue ongoing development and executive roles in healthcare."

To nominate a colleague, participants must fill out a short online form that includes a free response section to describe the candidate’s attributes and contributions. The form can be found online at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HBAAtlantaLeadershipAward. All nominations are due by August 1, 2012.

A panel of organization and industry judges including representatives from the national HBA executive committee, the HBA Atlanta chapter board of directors and the advisory board for the Atlanta Chapter will select the award recipient, who will be recognized at a year-end celebration in December. She will also receive a complimentary annual membership to the HBA Atlanta chapter.

“The Woman in Healthcare Leadership Award is a great opportunity for our industry to recognize one of our outstanding peers for her hard work and role as a mentor to other women,” Varney said. “We are excited to be kicking off the nomination process and are looking forward to meeting this year’s group of remarkable candidates.”
