On Wednesday, April 6, 2011 a panel discussion on Perspectives for Healthcare Reform for Florida will take place at the Intercontinental Hotel in Tampa, Florida. This HBA Florida Chapter evening program is part of the “Charting Your Course Series” and will provide to hear different perspectives on how Health Care Reform may impact our community in Florida.

Dr. Robert DiMasi attended medical school at the University of Sciences College Of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Kansas City, Missouri and is certified by the American Board of Osteopathic Family Physicians.

He served as the medical director for a premier urgent care Center in the Tampa Bay area for over 10 years. His passion for health, wellness and experience in medically supervised weight loss, nutritional counseling and exercise, provide additional benefits to his patients.

Madelyn E. Butler was born in Cuba and immigrated to the United States with her family at a young age. She spent her childhood in Georgia, then moved to Florida, where she completed high school. She attended the University of Florida, where she received both her undergraduate and medical degrees. She later completed her residency at the University of South Florida. Since beginning her practice in 1994, Madelyn’s contributions to the field have been recognized by both professional organizations and her peers. She currently serves as president of the Florida Medical Association, has provided public education as Channel 8’s “Medical Expert in OB/GYN” and has received the “Outstanding Physician’s Award”. Recently named “The Best OB/GYN Group” by The Florida Medical Journal, Madelyn (and her fellow members of The Woman’s Group) have seen their “best-in-class practice” vision come to fruition. In her spare time, Madelyn loves to enjoy her family - Bill (married 20 years), Olivia, Christian and Donovan.

J. JAMES ROWSEY, MDJ. JAMES ROWSEY, MD

Since October 2007, Dr. Rowsey has worked on medical legislation initiatives for Sen. Tom Coburn, MD, (R-OK). He previously served on the faculty at the University of South Florida, University of Oklahoma, Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, and at St. Luke’s Cataract & Intraocular Lens Institute in Tarpon Springs, FL. Dr. Rowsey recently received Shaler Richardson, MD, Service to Medicine Award from the Florida Society of Ophthalmology (FSO), the preeminent professional association for medical and osteopathic doctors who specialize in vision care. Established in honor of Shaler Richardson, MD, this annual award is presented to a Florida ophthalmologist who has made the greatest personal contribution to quality patient care by coordinating, participating, collaborating, and integrating ophthalmology into the great body of the medical profession on a local, state or national level.

Dr. Rowsey earned his undergraduate and medical degrees at The George Washington University in Washington, DC. He completed his internship and residency at Henry Ford Hospital. His professional affiliations include the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Intraocular Implant Society, American Medical Association, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Florida Society of Ophthalmology, Florida State Medical Association, LASIK Institute, the Pan American Ophthalmological Society, Pasco County Medical Society, Tampa Bay Ophthalmological Society, and the Henry Ford Hospital Residents Society.

DENISE REMUS, PhD, RNDENISE REMUS, PhD, RN
Chief Quality Officer, BayCare Health System

Denise Remus, PhD, RN, currently serves as chief quality officer for BayCare Health System, the largest, community-based health system in the Tampa Bay region. She is responsible for overseeing BayCare’s quality programs and the health system’s performance improvement and patient safety initiatives.

She previously was the vice president of clinical informatics for Premier, Inc. She also served as the senior research scientist for quality indicators at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), an arm of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. With more than 30 years of health care experience, Dr. Remus is considered an expert in health care quality measurement and improvement, pay for performance, and risk and severity adjustment. She has served on numerous national committees and technical advisory panels for organizations such as the National Quality Forum, the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC), Alliance for Cardiac Care Excellence, American Nurses Association, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National Association of Health Data Organizations, the Texas Healthcare Information Council and the Texas Council on Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke Surveillance.

She earned her bachelor’s of nursing from the College of St. Scholastica in Minnesota and her master’s and doctorate degrees in nursing from the University of Minnesota, with an emphasis in gerontology and ethics. She has practiced in a variety of clinical areas including medical and surgical nursing, critical care, hospice home care, long term care, and as a geriatric clinical nurse specialist. Dr. Remus began her career as a commissioned officer in the United States Air Force.
