HBA Southern California chapter: News from your President: Jan 2011

Summary:

The Southern California Chapter board of directors kicked off the new year with our inaugural board meeting on January 17.

The Southern California Chapter board of directors kicked off the new year with our inaugural board meeting on January 17. Our 17-member board was joined by Mary-Margaret Armstrong, HBA staff director of chapter development, as we geared up for another exciting year. The bar is very high this year, as our chapter was honored as the 2010 HBA Chapter Excellence Award, and our past president, Laura Clark, won the Council of Chapter Presidents award.

Our chapter will focus on three key areas for 2011:

  • Fully engage in the HBA “Year of the Volunteer,” a theme that recognizes the key role volunteers play in our continued success
  • Build on our successful launch of the Women in Science Affinity group to provide members in scientific roles with professional support for their career advancement
  • Launch an advisory board of key business leaders who will help us continue to deliver on our promise of furthering the advancement of women in healthcare

The broad range of programs offered by our chapter continues to be at the heart of our success, and our programs committee has exciting plans along the theme of “the leadership edge.” Stay tuned for more details.

The kickoff board meeting ended with some fun as well. I have been traveling throughout Mexico recently, and brought back a piñata filled with sweets and treats for the board. Its ‘disassembly’ was a fun stress reliever for the group!

Please go to the board tab to see the complete list of all your board members and our roles. We are always interested in your ideas, so feel free to contact us throughout the year.

See you at a future program!

Sue E. Steven
HBA Southern California Chapter President
