In November, the HBA Chicago Chapter board met with its advisory committee to review 2011 strategies and gain input from industry senior leaders. Advisors included: Elizabeth Azzarello, divisional vice president, strategic initiatives at Abbott; Suzanne McDonald, VP managed markets and government affairs at Orexigen (and former HBA Chicago board member) and Anne Allison, senior director human resources at Astellas. The board members reviewed and provided feedback on the 2010 achievements and program highlights, as well as current challenges and the 2011 operating plan.

Successes outlined for 2010 included:

  • Programming enhancements, including “Red Carpet” high impact programs, expanding the mentoring program into its second year, and hosting the first executive women’s salon
  • Contracting with Apex Management to support program execution and logistics
  • Hosting the first on-site event at Baxter—resulting in an attendance record
  • Expanding venues to include a summer networking event, held in downtown Chicago at Millennium Park
  • Completing a members’ survey to better understand member composition, need and interest

Current challenges in the 2011 plan include:

  • How to best articulate and communicate the member value proposition to retain and attract membership
  • Appealing to the growing team of members in transition
  • Expanding the membership base beyond a core group of companies
  • Solidifying the kinds of programs targeted for executive women
