I volunteer for the United Force for Change because to tackle our world’s most important issues, it takes the best talent and that means ensuring both talented women and men are represented at all levels of an organization.
Volunteering has impacted my career by opening my world up exponentially – to people, ideas and opportunities I would not otherwise have had. The skills I have honed such as leadership, financial planning, crisis management and more have been developed through my years as a volunteer with the HBA. Every employer I have had has encouraged me to volunteer because we all should give back AND volunteering enriches one’s careers with new skills and relationships.
My favorite HBA event I ever attended was…oh my, this is a hard one! One of my favorite HBA events is the Annual Conference that I chaired in Baltimore. It was the proof of concept that the conference could be successfully held at different areas of the U.S. and world and it was a home run. The Woman of the Year event when Charlotte Sibley was honored as Woman of the Year was one of the most memorable. Her authenticity about the ups and downs of a career was so refreshing and meaningful.
Volunteering has expanded my network by enabling me to meet so many amazing individuals who I had the opportunity to work side-by-side with on local and national global initiatives. Working with the amazing leaders in HBA Europe was one of many highlights.
The most valuable lesson I learned from a fellow volunteer is to continue to look ahead to the next decade of your mission and the impact you want to have. Carolyn Buck Luce (2012 Woman of the Year) taught me that.
My favorite part of volunteering for the HBA is knowing I am making an impact AND simultaneously honing my own skills.
What would be your advice to someone thinking about joining or getting more involved with the HBA? Say yes! Go for it! You will never regret it and you will be sharing this exact remark to others!
