J. Gavin Helton, MD

J Gavin HeltonIn July 2015 Dr.  J. Gavin Helton assumed the position of medical director of ambulatory medicine for Mercy Virtual.

Dr. Helton has seventeen years of internal medicine experience acting as a primary care physician in the St. Louis area. He believes the integration of virtual care is the next major step in restructuring care delivery-a true patient focused care continuum. Mercy Virtual’s ambulatory program represents a collaborative effort with the patient’s primary care physician offering direct augmentation of care. The development of this interdisciplinary team allows for improved patient care and quality of life as well as improved physician satisfaction while decreasing overall cost. This unique approach is especially necessary when caring for the higher acuity, chronically ill patients where the current episodic model provides gaps in care. Greater access at home through frequent contact and wireless monitoring, virtual encounters-real time video/audio visits, disease specific education, medication and behavioral adherence programs, streaming biometric data, and the use of predictive and prescriptive analytics allows for immediate intervention.

Dr. Helton received his undergraduate degree from St. Louis University and attended medical school at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis where he also served as chief medical resident. As a member of the faculty staff he has continued through his career to be an educator for internal medicine residents.
